Docomomo International is pleased to announce that next weekend, 27-28 February 2021, will happen the 10th mASEANa International Conference, online via Zoom Webinar.

Started in 2015, the mASEANa (modern ASEAN architecture) Project is designed to operate for six years until 2020. Within the defined period local and foreign architects, researches, politicians and citizens are called to think together and take action on modern architecture in Southeast Asia.

“For 2021, as the duration of the project has coincided with the pandemic, the situation has served as a catalyst for rethinking our spatial relationships. Beyond the aesthetics and politics of modernity, the medicalization of spaces must also be analyzed. This opens the possibilities of learning more about the politics, economics, and techno-medical interventions that have informed the creation of spaces in the 20th century. The second day of the conference will be a culmination of the mASEANa Project, with reports on the modern architecture of Southeast Asia from various scholars.”

Day 1: Medicalization of Modern Architecture in Tropical Southeast Asia and Japan:  (9:30 am -3 pm PST / 10:30 am-4 pm JST)

• Keynote Presentation by Prof. Fumiyo Suzaki, Kanagawa University, Japan – “Dwelling, Sanitation, and Modernization: Implications for the Post-Corona Era from the History of Modern Housing in Japan”
• Panelists: Masayuki Yokota, Jiat-Hwee Chang, Gerard Lico and Yoshiyuki Yamana

Day2: Spectrum of modern architecture in Southeast Asia: (9:30 am -3 pm PST / 10:30 am-4 pm JST)
