13th Docomomo_Brazil Seminar
Docomomo Brazil is holding their 13th Seminar, from 7th to 10th October at the the UFBA Faculty of Architecture in Salvador with the theme “Brazilian Modern Architecture. 25 years of Docomomo Brazil. All worlds into one”.
According to the words of Jose Carlos Huapaya Espinoza, the General Coordinator of the 13th Docomomo Brazil Seminar:
“The 13th Docomomo_Brazil Seminar, from October 7 to 10, 2019, has two meanings: first, it included the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of the first seminar in June 1995; second, because, in this celebration, the event returns to the same place where it was held 25 years earlier – the UFBA Faculty of Architecture in Salvador. Therefore, it is not only a question of returning the seminaries to their “origin”, but of rethinking and reflecting on them, with a retrospective and, in particular, prospective vision, looking to the future and pointing to the challenges to come.”
We understand that these challenges, more than ever, must be thought from a collective perspective, joining forces, bringing us closer together. Thus, the Organizing Committee of the 13th Docomomo_Brazil Seminar was made up of representatives of all Salvador’s Architecture and Urbanism courses and, together with the current Docomomo_Brazil Coordination, constituted a Scientific Committee formed by members of the nine Docomomo_BR Regional Nuclei. Likewise, the Organizing Committee invited the 12 Latin American countries that, besides Brazil, have national Docomomo nuclei to take part and participate in the Scientific Committee.
Following this logic, the theme of the 13th Docomomo_Brazil Seminar “Modern Brazilian Architecture. 25 years of Docomomo Brazil. All worlds into one” is the result of the aforementioned panorama and with this interest not only to promote the revision and expansion of the Brazilian architecture and urbanism historiography in the various scales, but also to understand it from possible national and international networks and articulations, with emphasis on the South-South cases and, especially, the Latin American one. Thus, four axes of discussion were proposed, the results of a series of emerging and empty researches yet to be filled: History and Historiography of Architecture and Urbanism in Brazil; Inventory and documentation; Modernism as a Culture; and Theories and practices of intervention in the modern.
Finally, the 13th Docomomo_Brazil Seminar is also a preparatory event for the 27th World Congress of Architects UIA2020RIO, the most important world architecture event to be held in Rio de Janeiro in July 2020, promoted by the International Union of Architects (UIA) and organized by the Institute of Architects of Brazil (IAB).”
The Seminar will have keynote lectures from Hugo Mondragón López, Louise Noelle Gras and Anahi Ballent. It will also include 30 thematic sessions and poster presentation.
