Coimbra, 20-21 October 2025

Docomomo Portugal and the Department of Architecture of the University of Coimbra are thrilled to announce the 1st Docomomo Portugal Congress, entitled “Teaching, Reuse and Transformation of Modern Architecture and the City”, which will take place at the Gil Vicente Academic Theater and the José Falcão High School, in Coimbra, on October 20-21, 2025.

The program include keynote lectures held by Portuguese and international architects — Gonçalo Byrne; Alexandre Alves Costa e Sérgio Fernandez; João Mendes Ribeiro e Gonçalo Canto Moniz; Franz Graf e Giulia Marino —, presenting interventions they have undertaken that are considered reference works in the context of modern architecture rehabilitation; thematic parallel sessions, guided visits, film screenings, and book presentations.
Docomomo International’s chair, Uta Pottgiesser, will join us at the opening session and first conference day.

The main goal of the congress is to provide a platform for in-depth discussions, dissemination, and the exchange of ongoing research on the Portuguese modern heritage, with a focus on its transformation and rehabilitation. It will be an opportunity to share knowledge and foster interdisciplinary dialogues among architects, historians, designers, researchers, and the wider public.
