Learning from the past. What future? Challenges and opportunities.
The Architecture Faculty of Porto University (FAUP) will host on May 6th, 7th and 8th, 2019, an International Congress that will mark the closing of the Research Project ´Mapping Public Housing Map – A critical review of the State-subsidized residential architecture in Portugal (1910-1974)´, financed by FCT, Rui Ramos is his researcher responsible.
The program of this International Congress will include:
. guided tours of four Porto neighborhoods (Rainha D. Leonor, Bairro de São João de Deus, Bairro Pio XII and Bairro do Lagarteiro);
. the presentation of a documentary;
. the opening of the exhibition entitled ´Habitação em Portugal: História e Conteporaneidade dos Bairros financiados pelo Estado entre 1910 e 1974´ [Housing in Portugal: History and Contemporaneity of the Neighbourhoods financed by the State between 1910 and 1974];
. conferences and debates moderated by journalists Cândida Pinto and Valdemar Cruz, in which Prof. Ana Tostões, Chair of Docomomo International, will participate.
The Congress is organized around four topics:
# 1. Colonizing Territories, Conquering Wills: Housing as Political Weapon;
# 2. The Social Dimension of the Housing Problem. The Society and Cities Reorganization in Modernity Context;
# 3. Housing Buildings as Typo-morphological Laboratories during the 20th Century;
# 4. The Challenge of a New Time. Preservation or Transformation of State-Subsidized Housing Architecture,
Several international authors – Mark Swenarton, Franz Graf and Leandro Medrano – will have presentations at the congress. The architect Alejandro Aravena – Pritzker and curator of the Architecture Biennial in Venice, in 2016 – will give the closing lecture at the Sala Suggia at Casa da Música.
