The international online debate event series “Context, Contrast, Continuity – Heritage Conservation and Urban Development” focuses on how the needs of conservation as well as development requirements can be managed in the urban context. How can historically developed urban fabrics/structures or singular buildings withstand the pressure for change from e.g. the real estate industry or housing demands? What can be done by the City’s administration, politicians and society to protect its cultural heritage? How can existing buildings be integrated into the ongoing development and possibly be adapted to the new standards of living of our era?
On 10th June it will be discussed the possibilities of the roof aka the 5th façade of housing estate: How was the roof area used in Modernist architecture – such as the Neues Frankfurt or the White City Tel Aviv? How are roofs used today? How can they best be used? And how can we adapt Modernist housing estates and their roof areas to today’s requirements? E.g. adding additional floors and/or solar panels and/or roof terraces?
