“Keeping It Modern” Getty Foundation distinguishes FAUP project for Álvaro Siza’s Swimming Pools
Financing of 100 thousand euros will be applied to the development of a management and conservation plan

Docomomo International is glad to inform that the project by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), which counted with the participation of Professor Ana Tostões, Chair of Docomomo International, coordinated by Teresa Cunha Ferreira and directed to the study of management and conservation of the Piscina de Marés complex, in Leça da Palmeira, designed by Álvaro Siza between 1960 and 1973, just guaranteed a financing of 100 thousand euros under the “Keeping It Modern” program, promoted by the prestigious Getty Foundation (USA).

This is the first time that a work located in Portugal has been distinguished since the creation, in 2014, of this program dedicated to safeguarding and preserving modern architecture globally, and which this year has its last edition.

With the duration of three years and the support of the Municipality of Matosinhos, the project dedicated to the study of Piscina de Marés has as main objective the development of a management and conservation plan for the iconic complex signed by Álvaro Siza.

The work will be based on the documentation of the building’s history, construction and heritage values, on the implementation of digital survey, inspection and monitoring tools, on the investigation of the diagnosis and repair of reinforced concrete, as well as on the preparation of maintenance and maintenance manuals. of use with a view to its management and future preservation.

It is also proposed to create a methodology that can be adapted to other works by Álvaro Siza included in the indicative list of World Heritage, proposed in 2016 by the Portuguese Government to UNESCO, as well as to other works of architecture of the 20th century in Portugal.
