Docomomo Portugal is happy to announce that the first talk of the IST-CiTUA ARCH TALKS 2026 organized by CiTUA together with Docomomo Portugal is taking place on 2 March 2026 at 13H30 at auditorium VA1 at Instituto Superior Técnico. Titled “Casa das Canoas: restauro de um ícone da arquitetura moderna” this first lecture will be held by professor José Belmont Pessôa from the UFF – Universidade Federal Fluminense (Brasil).
José Pessoa is an architect with a degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1982), specializing in conservation and restoration of monuments and sites, UFBA (1984), and holds a PhD in Territorial Planning by the Istituto Universitario Di Architettura Di Venezia (1992) and post-doctoral studies on Urban Invariants in Portuguese Historic Centers, University of Coimbra (2007). He is Full Professor at the School of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) and in the Postgraduate Program in Architecture and Urbanism. He is visiting professor at the universities: University of Coimbra (2015, 2017 and 2019); Polytechnic University of Milan (2015); UNIROMA 3 (2007, 2015); Nova University of Lisbon (2007 and 2010); University of Algarve (2007); Instituto Superior Técnico – University of Lisbon (2007, 2010, 2013 and 2019); Eduardo Mondlane University (2012); University of Évora (2013); Aix-Marseille University (2013, 2015, 2018 and 2020), University Institute of Architecture of Venice (2016), University of Minho (2020), University of Porto (2020). He is Vice-President of the Oscar Niemeyer Foundation, member of the Executive and Scientific Council of the interactive portal piHip-Portuguese Influenced Heritage, which is part of the project “Heritage of Portuguese Origin in the World – Architecture and Urbanism” of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Scientist of Nosso Estado/FAPERJ since January 2018 and member of Docomomo Brasil. His main research areas are the restoration and conservation of built historical heritage, urban and regional planning, with an emphasis on the restoration and revitalization of historic centers with focus on modern architecture.
