Docomomo Québec has organised the lecture “The Bata Company and its built legacy: The Story of an Extraordinary Enterprise”, to be held at École de design de l´UQAM, on the 27th February.
The Bata Company, which evolved from a small workshop in the city of Zlín in Moravia, today the Czech Republic, at end of the 19th century, became one of the largest shoe producers in entire world in the second half of the last century. The Company founded tens of factories and company towns in Czechoslovakia, Europe, North America, South Asia and more, with original functionalist architecture.
Presented by Dr. Milan Balaban, historian and researcher at Tomas Bata University in Zlin, the lecture will cover the history of the Bata Company, expansion abroad, development and everyday life in factory towns, as well the transformation of the company towns after the production in most of them ended.
The lecture will be held in English.
