Vasco Vieira da Costa: Library of details

The opening of the exhibition “Vasco Vieira da Costa: Library of Details”, will take place at Casa-Atelier Marques da Silva, Porto, on November 14th at 6.30 pm. To mark the occasion, there will be held a round table composed by three Vieira da Costa’s collaborators: António Madureira, José Quintão and Manuel Correia Fernandes.

Vasco Vieira da Costa (1911-1982) was an Angolan architect with a degree in architecture from the School of Fine Arts of Porto (1949) and urbanism from the Faculty of Sciences of Paris (1948). He worked with Le Corbusier between 1947 and 1948, and returned to Angola in 1949, where he developed all his work. Vieira da Costa also gave rise to the creation of the first architecture course in the country, founded in Luanda in 1979.

The exhibition will present a set of drawings particularly focused on constructive details from the archives of Vieira da Costa. These archives, consisting of about 1300 drawings, belong to the Agostinho Neto University and were the target of a restoration project developed by the Marques da Silva Foundation in partnership with the Conservation and Restoration Workshop of the University of Porto.

The challenges facing the preservation of this and other architectural archives today will also set the tone for a second round table that will take place on December 12th, attended by the President of Docomomo International,  Ana Tostões, who will be joined by Ana Freitas, Daniel Quintã and Julia Albani.
