Conference: The Continuing Legacy of Alison and Peter Smithson

Dirk van den Heuvel is an Associate Professor at TU Delft and heads the Jaap Bakema Study Centre at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. He has published and lectured widely on the work of Alison and Peter Smithson. Together with Max Risselada he curated the Design Museum exhibition on the Smithsons’ house designs, ‘From The House of the Future to a House of Today’, as well as the Team 10 retrospective for the former Netherlands Architecture institute. He was curator of the Dutch pavilion for the Venice Biennale 2014. Currently, he is a Richard Rogers Fellow with Harvard GSD.

Deborah Saunt is a Director of the architecture practice DSDHA. She is also active internationally in teaching and research, having completed a PhD thesis as part of the RMIT Practice Research programme as well as a research fellowship in the Built Environment awarded by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851. DSDHA are currently working on plans to carry our refurbishments and alterations to the Smithsons’ Economist Building (completed in 1964, remodelled by SOM 1990).

Peter Salter is an award-winning designer and educator; his recently completed Walmer Yard, a residentail development in West London, has been widely publicised. He is Professor of Architectural Design at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. He worked with Alison and Peter Smithson in the early 1980’s.

Takero Shimazaki is an educator and Director of Takero Shimazaki Architects. He has taught and lectured internationally, including leading units at The Cass, London Metropolitan University and the Architectural Asociation, London. He briefly collaborated with Peter Smithson during the late stage of his practice.

Presentations from the speakers will be followed by a panel discussion with audience contributions, chaired by Docomomo UK Trustee Prof. Tony Fretton.
