Online Seminar ACERCA DE LA ARQUITECTURA / ABOUT ARCHITECTURE

Docomomo International is pleased to announce the Seminar “Acerca de la Arquitectura” [“About Architecture”]; a cycle of conferences of international academic excellence, organized by the Casa Curutchet allied with Alejandro Lapunzina. The Seminar is free for architects and registered architects of the College of Architects of the Province of Buenos Aires.

It will be held from Barcelona and Paris and is organized in four conferences that will be held on every Friday at 3:00 p.m. (GMT -3) from July 10 to July 31, by Zoom until the capacity of the room is exhausted and will also be broadcast through the Casa Curutchet Facebook page and the CAPBA TV YouTube channel. It will address the following topics:

I. THE IDEA OF ARCHITECTURE (10th July)
• What is architecture? Architecture as a discipline of critical reflection.
• Who is the architect? The role of the architect in society; What does it mean to be an architect?
• Think architecturally [build the project].
• Two examples: the bridge over the Segre river in Lleida (Miralles & Pinós) and the Plaza Santa Cruz in Rosario (Caballero & Giménez).

II. ARCHITECTURE AS A LANGUAGE / THE ARCHITECTURE LANGUAGE (17th July)
• Elements of language: from literature and music to fine arts and architecture.
• A tour through some elements of the architectural language.
• Invent language: Le Corbusier and the dismantling of the wall with windows.
• Interaction of the elements of the architectural language through some examples [the German Pavilion of Barcelona (Mies van der
Rohe), Capitol of Chandigarh (Le Corbusier), and the Dhaka Assembly (Louis Kahn), among others.]

III. NARRATIVE AND SYMBOLISM IN ARCHITECTURE (24th July)
• Architectural discourse and narration.
• Build a text, narrate a project.
• Does narrative and symbolism exist in modern and contemporary architecture?
• Two particular cases: Igualada Cemetery (Miralles & Pinós) and Ronchamp (Le Corbusier).

IV. ARCHITECTURE POETICS (31st July)
• Literature / architecture: an analogy.
• The architectural condition as a poetic of language: Gallaratesse housing complex (Aldo Rossi).
• Build an architectural poem: the Curutchet House (Le Corbusier).

The conferences will last between 45 and 60 minutes.

Alejandro Lapunzina
Born in New York but graduated as an Architect from the University of Buenos Aires (1983). Shortly after he returned to the United States, with a scholarship to complete the Master of Architecture at Washington University (St. Louis) for which he received in 1987 the AIA medal for excellence in the study of Architecture. Thereafter he taught Architecture at the Universities of Arkansas, Illinois (Urbana-Champaign), performing, between 1994 and 2013, as Director of the Study Abroad Program of the Illinois School in Versailles (France) and since 2014 in Barcelona-El Vallés (Spain).
He has recently been appointed as Suzanne and William Allen Professor, an important distinction awarded by the School of Architecture of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
It should be noted that Alejandro is the author of the book “Le Corbusier’s Maison Curutchet” edited by Princeton Architectural Press in 1997, the first book written about the House. Also of numerous articles about it and its author, which makes it one of the main international specialists of the work of Le Corbusier.
