The extensive use of exterior glazed enclosures is one of the most character-defining features of Modern architecture. After decades in service, these facade components have fallen into disrepair and now pose numerous challenges. Consequently, many pre- and post-war steel frame window walls, curtain walls and ribbon windows have been altered to address decay, reestablish functionality and improve appearance or performance. The resulting interventions have prompted important discussions around issues of heritage conservation, building science and sustainability.
Focusing on 20 case studies of iconic Modern buildings from the US and Europe, the book provides a combination of historical information, technical evaluations and critical analysis. Historic images, along with photographs and technical 3D details from before and after the alterations illustrate the main intervention strategies of restoration, rehabilitation and replacement. Case studies include Fallingwater by Frank Lloyd Wright, Farnsworth House by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, as well as Fagus Factory and Bauhaus Dessau by Walter Gropius.
