Italian diaspora in Valparaíso
“Architects, engineers, artists between the 19th and 20th centuries”

Within the framework of the collaboration agreement signed between the Centro de Estudios y Gestión del Patrimonio de la Universidad de Valparaíso and EdA Esempi di Architettura International Research Center, the following editorial team has been formed: Dra. Olimpia Niglio, Architect Manuel Hernández A ., Historian Baldomero Estrada T. and Architect Francisco Bustamante Ch. The team invites researchers from all over the Ibero-Italian-American academic and professional world to carry out critical and illustrated essays about the material work and contributions to Chilean culture, of architects, engineers, artists and artisans of Italian origin in Valparaíso, in order to renew the theme of Italian migrations to Chile.

The goal is to approach the concept of transculturation by carrying out a brief historical analysis of the migratory process and what was the nature of the contacts of Italian migrations to Valparaíso in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Valparaíso is a fragile piece of world heritage – the UNESCO World Heritage Committee recognized the Historic District of Valparaíso in the List of World Heritage Cities in July 2003, in the CIII Cultural Landscape category, because it combines elements such as its particular topography and special architecture with the idiosyncrasy of its inhabitants, due to its spontaneous settlement pattern in the city topography. “… Valparaíso represents an extraordinary example of the heritage of the industrial era associated with international maritime trade in the late 19th and early 20th centuries., When it became the first commercial port on the maritime routes of the Pacific coast of South America. Due to the migratory phenomena of this period, the Italian community in Chile is very present, since they mainly arrived in the city of Valparaíso.”

The objective of this project is to rescue and show the importance of the Italian presence through various expressions, especially cultural and artistic, for the benefit of Valparaíso and its society. In summary, the works must adhere to the usual norms typical of academic research, whether in the form of an essay or scientific research, detailed below:
– Collaborators will be asked to verify the authorship of the works architectural or artistic performed by Italians and carry out a critical analysis, technical and aesthetic, mention which were the local collaborators and which contributions to the geographical and cultural environment where they are inserted.
– Review the status of the issue, other existing publications on the subject to try. Cite primary or secondary research sources, orally, journalistic, documentaries, publications, dates, pages, authors, editorials. Sites where the source is located: series archives libraries, other folios.
– Accompany your presentations with plans, maps, photographs and graphics.
