Within the aim of the celebration of National Day of the Architect, which was celebrated on 3rd July, the Centro Regional Section of the Portuguese Order of Architects will hold the conference “Arquitectas da nossa casa” on 26 October 2024 to highlight the portuguese women architects.
The aim of this event is to give visibility to the current practice of women architects, providing a space for reflection and debate, as well as recognition and celebration of their diverse career paths. The conference will be composed of several roundtables, and at the end have the opening of the exhibition Arquitectas da nossa Casa [Architects of our House], which will be open to the public until 31st January 2025 at Casa das Caldeiras, in Coimbra,
The first of its kind to be held by the Portuguese Order of Architects, it has the participation and institutional support of the International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA), based at Virginia Tech University in the United States, and the Portuguese association Mulheres na Arquitectura (Women in Architecture), founded in 2017, whose activity is aimed at reflection and action in the field of gender equality in the various practices involved in making architecture, the city and the territory.

On the occasion of the conference and exhibition, Mariana Santos Martins, Cátia Ramos, Cláudia Santos Silva, Liliana Moniz, Rita Coutinho, and Sofia Carvalho Araújo, members of the conference’s organizing committee published the article “Todos os nomes” in Público claiming the need to recognize much more women in architecture: https://www.publico.pt/2024/10/24/opiniao/opiniao/nomes-2109342
“Todos os nomes. É esse o convite que decidimos fazer à nossa sociedade. Que nos mostrem o que estão a fazer as mulheres arquitectas, o que fizeram, porque o fizeram. Que apareçam, que não se acanhem de se promoverem.”
“Em 1991, o prémio Pritzker foi atribuído a Robert Venturi (1925-2018), deixando de parte a sua co-autora e esposa, Denise Scott Brown (1931), sem qualquer justificação razoável. Desde então, algumas mulheres têm conquistado o devido reconhecimento pela organização: desde Zaha Hadid (1950-2016); a Kazuyo Sejima (1956), com o seu sócio; também Carme Pigem Barceló (1962), com os seus dois sócios; a dupla irlandesa Yvonne Farrell (1951) e Shelley McNamara (1952); ou Anne Lacaton (1955) com o seu sócio. Em 46 ocasiões, desde 1979 até agora, houve seis mulheres contempladas por uma das distinções mais cobiçadas da arquitectura. Todos estes seis nomes mencionamos com grande honra, mas maior importância tem apontarmos que, até hoje, ao sétimo nome – Denise – não foi ainda feita justiça nesta lista.
