The 50th anniversary of the death of the German / American master Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) will continue to be celebrated in Porto.
The exhibition highlights one of the characteristics of Mies van der Rohe’s work that is rarely remembered: his ability to shape public places in the modern city, through architecture and integrating preexisting nature and urban fabric. It is mainly dedicated to its American phase.
The exhibition opened, at Casa das Artes, on March 7, with the testimony, in voice, of the former collaborator of Mies van der Rohe, Peter Forbes. Alongside the exhibition, on March 9, Christiane Lange and Paul and Johannes Robbrecht talked about the Krefeld Golfclub reconstruction project (Krefeld, 1930).
Talks with Ana Tostões, about the extensive renovation project of Villa Tugendhat (Brno, Czech Republic, 1929-30), and with Mark Sexton, about the renovation interventions of the 860-880 Lake Shore Drive (Chicago) and the Crown Hall (Chicago, 1950-56) will be rescheduled in due course. Fritz Neumeyer’s conference, “Opposites in dialogue: Mies van der Rohe and the art of building”, will also be rescheduled.
The exhibition will be open until June 21st.
“The Measure of Mies” _online session series
Taking advantage of the extension of “Mies van der Rohe: Un’idea di Città [An idea of a City]”, MIES.5Oyears.PORTO organizes a series of online sessions “The Measure of Mies”, with the curator / organizer team of exhibition, from the Politecnico di Milano – Scuola di Scuola di Architettura Urbanistica Ingegneria delle Construzioni – Dipartimento di Architettura, Ingegneria della Costruzioni and Ambiente Costruito.
The sessions will take place between June 12th and 19th, in English.

“The Measure of Mies” evokes the article by John Winters, which analyzes in detail the design and design principles of the glass curtain of Mies’ skyscrapers, published in the magazine “Architectural Design, No. 900, in February 1972.
