Call for Catalogues: 2021 Philip Johnson Exhibition Catalogue Award

The Society of Architectural Historians is accepting nominations for the 2021 Publication Awards through July 31, 2020.

As architectural history exhibitions are able to address historical and critical questions in special ways, through the presentation of both documentation and artifacts to a diversified audience, so their catalogues have become distinctive vehicles for the expression of scholarship in architectural history. They remain as the substantial and enduring contribution after the life of the exhibition is spent. In order, therefore, to recognize and encourage excellence in this form of scholarship and publication, the Society of Architectural Historians established its annual Philip Johnson Exhibition Catalogue Award.

Criteria for Submission
The catalogue must be in English and written or edited by a North American scholar or originate in an exhibition in a North American institution or concern a North American subject. For the purposes of this award, “North American” is defined by Canada, the United States, and Mexico; and a “North American scholar” is defined as someone born in one of these three countries, or someone who published the catalogue while living or holding a position in one of these countries.
The catalogue must hold a printed copyright date of 2018 or 2019. The catalogue must concern works in the realm of architectural history, including urbanism, landscape, interior architecture, and set design. The catalogue must be specifically related to an exhibition. Self-published catalogues are not eligible. Subsequent editions of a catalogue are eligible only if the original core material has been edited or revised. A new preface or introduction with no changes to the original text is not eligible. Catalogues submitted for this award may not be submitted in the same year for the Elisabeth Blair MacDougall Award, the Alice Davis Hitchcock Award, the Antoinette Forrester Downing Award or the Spiro Kostof Award; books that have received one of those awards in a previous year may not be submitted for the Philip Johnson Award.

The Award
The award consists of a certificate and citation that will be presented at the Society’s 74th Annual International Conference in Montréal, Canada, April 14–18, 2021. The award will be announced in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians and the SAH Newsletter. The winning publication will become part of the Society’s permanent collection, displayed in the library of the CharnleyPersky House in Chicago, Illinois.

The Committee
The Committee is appointed by the president of the Society of Architectural Historians. One copy of the nominated publication, along with the completed nomination form, should be sent to each committee member postmarked by July 31, 2020.
