Docomomo Portugal and the Docomomo International Specialist Committee on Interior Design (ISC/ID) organized between 7-9 March 2024 the Conference “Modernist women interior designers and artists: to deepen the reading of the different expressions of female creativity.”
The conference was held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon, in celebration of the International Women’s Day. On March 9, the program included a guided tour of the MUDE in Lisbon and the Museum of Casa das Histórias Paula Rego in Cascais.
In the realm of modernist interior architecture, design and art, women have made significant but often overlooked contributions. This conference Modernist Women Interior Designers and Artists: Deepening the Reading of Different Expressions of Female Creativity aims to shed light on the multifaceted and diverse creativity of women within the Modern Movement. As we celebrate their innovative work, we invite scholars, researchers, and enthusiasts to submit papers that explore and expand upon the roles of women in shaping modernist interior spaces.
The Modern Movement, characterized by its commitment to the development of a better life for all, is marked by widely celebrated male figures such as Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, while numerous women designers and artists made equally remarkable contributions to the modern production. This conference aimed to fill this historical gap and promote a deeper understanding of the many ways in which women shaped the modern culture.
Docomomo Portugal is pleased to share that photos of the event can now be found in the gallery.
A conference publication is being prepared.
