Chartres International Meeting “When the Cathedrals burn”

Docomomo International would like to share the Chartres International Meeting “Quand les cathédrales brûlent” [“When the Cathedrals burn”], organized by the Centre international du Vitrail de Chartres and the Laboratoire TrAme (UR 4284) de l’université de Picardie Jules-Verne, which will be held on October 15-16, 2021.

From the abbey church of Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire in 1026 to Vézelay in 1165, from the cathedral of Canterbury in 1174 to Noyon in 1293, from the cathedral of Chartres in 1836 to Reims in 1914, from Nantes in 1972 to Paris in 2019… churches and cathedrals are on fire! Their restoration gives rise to recurring questions; technical, formal and material questions often accompanied by a distinctive lexical field (create, reconstruct, restore, restore, raise…).

After the fire of Notre-Dame de Paris, architects, researchers, sociologists, curators, theologians and, more broadly, political figures and citizens spoke, all testifying to the importance of the contemporary perspective on the values attached to the historical, artistic and religious heritage.

By bringing together various specialists, the Centre international du Vitrail de Chartres and the TrAme team of the University of Picardy Jules-Verne wish, by postponing the fire of Notre-Dame de Paris in the long run of the fires of cathedrals, to communicate with the current challenges of safeguarding cultural heritage.
